President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Abdoulaye Wade Pay Visit to Guinea in Anticipation of Elections

Monday, 14th September 2009
Members of the Press:

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, along with the President of Senegal, Mr. Abdoulaye Wade, paid a one-day working visit to neighboring Guinea on September 12 to confer with the leader of Guinea, Captain Dadis Camara. The meeting was aimed at reviewing progress to free and fair democratic elections in Guinea.

Presidents Johnson Sirleaf and Wade reaffirmed the positions of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) as well as the International Contact Group on the need for the restoration of democratic rule in Guinea. As chair of the Manor River Union sub regional grouping, it is the view of President Johnson Sirleaf that Liberia remains constructively engaged with the authorities in Guinea to ensure a peaceful transition to democratic rule.

Captain Camara has assured Presidents Johnson Sirleaf and Wade of his willingness to work with leaders and organizations in the sub-region to ensure a peaceful transition to democratic rule.

As you may know, Education Minister, Dr. Joseph Korto, and two of his deputies were served a weekís suspension last week for their failure to properly monitor the situation at the E. Jonathan Goodridge High School in Bardnersville, where students were learning under deplorable conditions.

The President has lifted the suspension on the Minister and his two deputies as of September 14, 2009. She will, however, continue to monitor the performance of the Ministry to see whether more permanent changes may be necessary to improve its performance.

The renovation work at the E. Jonathan Goodridge High School is well on course. Students should be returning to school this week. The renovation work, spearheaded by the Ministry of State, and supervised by the Ministry of Education, involved work on the roof of the building, the doors, rest rooms, ceiling, cutting of grass around the school, painting, etc. The renovation work is estimated to be USD$20,000.00

I thank you.
