Vice President Boakai Lauds the EU

Monrovia, Liberia - Vice President Joseph N. Boakai has lauded the European Union for standing by Liberia and continuing to render the country assistance.

He observed that the EU stood by the people of Liberia even during the crisis, and recalled the crucial role the Union played in ending the conflict.

Vice President Boakai made the commendation on September 17, when he dedicated the National Authorizing Office of the European Union at the Planning and Economic Affairs Ministry.

The National Authorizing Office of the European Union manages Liberiaís share of the European Union Development Fund which is allocated for infrastructure, governance, education and health.

The Liberian Vice President thanked the EU for cooperating with the Planning Ministry in restoring to Liberia the authority to manage the EU Development Fund.

Vice President Boakai used the occasion to call on Liberians to take advantage of opportunities provided by partners, whether in the form of manpower development,  direct cash benefits or micro-projects.

He observed that as a country emerging from a devastating civil conflict, Liberia needs all the assistance it can get to reconstruct.

Planning and Economic Affairs Minister Amara Konneh later guided Vice President Boakai and other Government and EU officials on a tour of the National Authorizing Office and other facilities of the Planning Ministry.

As a result of the civil conflict that engulfed the country, the authority to manage the EU Development Fund was taken from Liberia and turned over to the European Commission head in Cote díIvoire.

According to Planning Minister Konneh, Government called on the EU to restore the authority to manage Liberiaís portion of the EU development fund.
