Two Officials Dismissed

Friday, 23rd March 2007

Monrovia, Liberia - Two officials of the Ministry of Lands and Mines have been relieved of their posts by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Those dismissed are the Deputy Minister of Lands and Mines, Mr. Charles Dogoseh and Assistant Minister James Konuwa.  The men were relieved of their posts for their roles in granting bogus licenses for mining operations, according to an Executive Mansion release issued Thursday night.

The President has directed the Minister of Lands, Mines and Energy to review all licenses for gold and diamond mining and investigate their operations, to ensure that individuals or entities in possession of the licenses are not engaged in illicit operations.

The President has also requested the Ministry of Lands and Mines to enforce the ban on the exportation of scrap metals as the agreements covering such transactions are now being reviewed for possible renegotiation or cancellation.
