17 August Press Briefing notes

The President, Mrs. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, travels to the Republic of Guinea Tuesday, August 17, to consult with the authorities and the key election contestants of Guinea on the satisfactory electoral process that is underway in that country.  Her Excellency, who chairs the Mano River Union sub-regional grouping, will be joined in the consultations by the President of Sierra Leone, HE Ernest Bai Koroma.
They will discuss with Guinean leaders the transition process and express satisfaction with the process thus far.  The Mano River Union leaders will also encourage all stakeholders in Guinea to keep the process on course.

ē    The President has been informed that residents of the Ducor vicinity who have taken advantage of Governmentís relocation package will begin vacating the premises Tuesday, August 17, 2010.  Those who are yet to take advantage of Governmentís package or are refusing to leave will be served eviction notices by Government.
            The Process of selecting a contractor within the next ten days is on course, and
            Construction work at the hotel is expected to begin at the end of the Month.
             


ē    The President is pleased to have me inform you that the Government of Liberia has granted an Indonesian Company, Golden Veroleum (Liberia) Inc., a concession to development approximately 500,000 (five hundred thousand) acres of land for Oil Palm cultivation.  The US $1.6 billion development will take place in the South-eastern Counties of Sinoe, Grand Kru and Maryland and is expected to extend to Rivercess and River Gee. At final development, employment is expected to exceed 35-thousand direct jobs.

The concession was signed on behalf of Government by Agriculture Minister, Florence Chenoweth, Deputy Finance Minister, Tarnu Mawolo, and National Investment Commission Chairman Richard Tolbert, while Veroleumís Director, Matt Karinen signed for his company.
The Government and Veroleum have formulated a social and community development programme which includes employee housing, education and medical care.   The Concession Agreement is now being submitted to the National Legislature for ratification.
