Monrovia, Liberia - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has called on Liberians to emulate the Chinese experience of self-empowerment as the country continues its drive towards national recovery. The President spoke of the challenges, the reaction of the citizenry to the challenges, and governmentís response in meeting them as a true testimony that Liberiaís young democracy is at work.

According to an Executive Mansion release, the President spoke on Thursday at separate programs marking the launching of an Intensive Training Program on Hybrid Rice Cultivation Techniques and the closing Training Program on Bamboo and Rattan Weaving Techniques at the Booker Washington Institute in Kakata, Margibi County and the Monrovia Vocational Training Center (MVTC) respectively. The President noted the both programs must not be seen in their sizes, but the larger effect they have on Liberiaís development efforts. The programs were spearheaded under the auspices of the China-Liberia Agriculture Technical Cooperation. It was co-sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Food Program (WFP) and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

For his part, Chinese Ambassador Lin Songtian praised President Johnson Sirleaf for the key role she played in the realization of the projects. He announced that 22 trainees have completed the Hybrid Rice Cultivation training. 3 others, Ambassador Lin disclosed left on Wednesday for China to undergo 3 month training in advanced Hybrid Rice Cultivation. The Chinese Ambassador added that hybrid rice is suitable for Liberia. He also thanked President Johnson Sirleaf for encouraging the Bamboo and Rattan weaving program, and lauded the challenging role she played in ensuring that the program got off the ground.

Also present at the ceremony were the Acting Minister of Internal Affairs Madam Yah Kialain and the Acting Minister of Agriculture Madam Lwopu Kandakai.
