Monrovia, Liberia - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has joined hundreds of Liberian children at an Independence Day party in Monrovia, in commemoration of Liberiaís 160th Independence Anniversary which continued on Saturday.

The event held under the auspices of the Ministry of Gender, attracted children from the suburbs of Monrovia and its environs.

The Liberian leader, who attended the event on the grounds of the Capitol building, told the young children that it was important for all Liberians to feel a part of the independence celebrations. The President then joined the children in playing games and recitals.

Earlier, Gender and Development Minister, Varbah Gayflor, expressed appreciation to the President for extending her kind gesture to the children of Liberia. She also thanked parents for allowing their children to come out and celebrate the countryís 160th independence anniversary. Children from other parts of the country have also been treated to í26 parties across the country.

The President is this evening hosting foreign Diplomats accredited near Monrovia to a Soiree. The July 26 celebrations will be climaxed by fireworks later Saturday night in Monrovia. Saturday nightís fireworks are the second by government, conducted in collaboration with the government of China, which has provided the fireworks and experts free charge. The President will join Chinese ambassador, Lin Songtian and other dignitaries to perform the ceremonial switching to commence the display.

On Thursday night, residents of Buchanan and its environs in Grand Bassa County were treated to spectacular fireworks display to climax the official July 26 celebrations in the county.
