Monrovia, Liberia: President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Monday, November 7, 2016 received a Special Envoy from the Arab Republic of Egypt at her Foreign Ministry Office in Monrovia. The Special Envoy, Egypt’s Assistant Foreign Minister for African Affairs, Ambassador Mohamed Edrees was accompanied by the Egyptian Ambassador to Liberia, Alaa Issa.
According to an Executive Mansion release, the Egyptian Special Envoy delivered a special message to the Liberian leader from the President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah Saeed Hussein Khalil el-Sisi.
Presenting the Special message, Ambassador Edrees informed President Sirleaf that Egypt remains committed to its relations and friendship with Liberia and also reaffirmed that the longstanding bilateral relations will be maintained and strengthened.
He pointed out that the government of Egypt is aware of the pending transition in Liberia and will fully support the process. The Special Envoy also told President Sirleaf that his country will support training in several areas including agriculture, energy, and water management as well as provide scholarships for Liberians.
Ambassador Edrees further informed the Liberian President about a capacity-building initiative that targets over 900 security officers. “The medical department of the Armed Forces of Liberia will also undertake specialized and improved medical training in Cairo in February of 2017”, Ambassador Edrees indicated. He concluded by calling on President Sirleaf to consider a visit to Egypt before she leaves office.
Making brief remarks, President Sirleaf thanked the Arab Republic of Egypt for the many support to Liberia and acknowledged the longstanding relations before the two African nations. She also noted that the visit of the Special Envoy reflected the strength of the partnership and cooperation between Liberia and Egypt.
She particularly thanked President Khalil el-Sisi for sending an Envoy to Liberia, noting that it reflects Egypt’s interest in Liberia and his desire to strengthen the bilateral ties between both countries.
She further briefed the Egyptian Special Envoy about the security situation including the UNMIL drawdown process, the 2017 elections and other bilateral issues.
“Let me say openly that your Ambassador to Liberia has worked well with Liberia and we will work with him on a Joint Cooperation Agreement that outlines some of the many things we can achieve together”, President Sirleaf concluded.
