Monrovia, Liberia - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf says Liberia remains steadfast on the ‘One China Policy’ and will resist any person or group trying to undermine that policy.

The President, an Executive Mansion release says, spoke on Saturday during an official program marking the 58th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium. The Chief Executive congratulated the Government and people of China and noted the high level of cooperation which has led to a visit to China by the Liberian leader and a return visit this year by President Hu Jintao. The President acknowledged China’s support toward Liberia’s infrastructure rehabilitation and commended the Chinese engineering battalion in UNMIL for making a difference in local communities.

President Johnson Sirleaf traced the evolution of the People’s Republic of China and praised that Asian country for transforming from an agrarian to an industrialized economy. The transformation, President Johnson Sirleaf pointed out, is an inspiration to many other African countries. The Liberian leader also spoke highly of China’s direct investment in Africa which, she noted, represents a strong partnership between China and Africa.

For his part, Chinese Ambassador Zhou Yuxiao described Sino-Liberian relations as solid. He praised the Johnson Sirleaf Administration for the relative progress made at bringing about change. The Chinese ambassador welcomed the Liberian government’s commitment to the ‘One China Policy’ and pledged to work towards strengthening Sino-Liberian relations.
