Monday, 17th December 2007
Monrovia, Liberia - Liberia’s Vice President, Joseph N. Boakai has called on the various ethnic groups in Kongba District in Gbarpolu County to peacefully co-exist to pave the way for genuine peace, progress and development.

“Whether Gio, Gbandi, Lorma, Mandingo, Kissi, Gola, Mende or Kpelle, we are all the same people,” he told the residents.

Vice President Boakai was speaking Sunday during his second visit to Gbarpolu County in two weeks. The tour which took him to Kumgbor Town, Camp Alpha and Temah Town, coincided with the close of the Unity Party Candidate, Thoedore Momo’s campaign for Tuesday’s Senatorial run-off by-election in the County.

He challenged residents of the diamond-rich area to take their destiny into their hands and strive to develop their areas, noting “you can transform anywhere you find yourself into an area worth living”.

Vice President Boakai said he was impressed with the mixture of ethnic groups in the area and the fact that they continue to live in peace and harmony.

He said it was sad that everybody wants to live in the capital, Monrovia when they could stay in and develop their areas, and said he would recommend for special incentives for those who acquire training and opt to work in their home counties or other rural areas.

Vice President lauded residents of the area for their support and cooperation with the government, and assured them that the current government was committed to ensuring that they get the basic necessities like roads, schools and health centers to make life conducive for them.

Earlier, representatives of youth, elders, women and traditional leaders cited lack of roads, clinics, schools and market facilities as major problems confronting them.

The General Town Chief of Camp Alpha informed Vice President Boakai that several persons lost their lives in the town last year from  water borne diseases due to lack of health facilities.

The Commissioner of Kongbah District, David Zoe, informed Vice President Boakai that  Kungbor Town has neither  a high school nor a junior high school.
