Vice President Boakai Hails Ailing Archbishop

Monday, 1st June 2009
Monrovia, Liberia -Vice President Joseph N. Boakai has assured ailing Archbishop Michael Kpakala Francis that the dreams he had for Liberia would be realized during the administration of the Unity Party-led Government headed by Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

“God will help us achieve all the things you stood for,” Vice President Boakai told Archbishop Francis on June 1 during a visit to his 8th Street Sinkor residence.

The Liberian Vice President praised the Catholic Archbishop for the pivotal role he played in the restoration of peace to Liberia, and called on all Liberians to pray for his speedy recovery.

Vice President Boakai lamented the condition of the Catholic Archbishop, whom he described as “the Conscience of the Liberian Nation.' He quickly added, “God has a reason for everything. We cannot question Him.”

During the brief visit, Vice President Boakai presented Archbishop Francis a get well card and fruit and juices.

Monsignor Edward Jackson and Father Henry Somah, who received the Vice President, informed him that Archbishop Francis is mentally alert: “He recognizes people and understands whatever they say. He listens to radio, music and watches television,” Father Somah told the Vice President

Archbishop Francis, 73, was in the vanguard of the fight for justice, equal rights and the rule of law in Liberia. He served as a lone voice against the human rights abuses perpetrated during the Samuel Kanyon Doe and Charles Taylor regimes.  He lost his speech a few years ago and now moves with the help of a wheelchair.
