VP Boakai says the future of Liberia depends on its Agricultural Sector

The Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, Honorable Joseph Nyumah Boakai says the future of Liberia largely depend on its agricultural sector, which he described as the country best bid for growth and development.

According to Hon. Boakai, Liberia need to be more focused in the areas of agriculture development, increase crops production, capacity building for farmers and agricultural workers and a proactive agriculture enhancement program in the country.

Vice President Boakai made the remarks at the Embassy of the Republic of Liberia in Paris, France where he made brief stopover visit last Saturday at the head of a high-powered delegation to the 35th Session of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Annual Governing Council Meeting in Rome, Italy.

He said Liberia has vast fertile land suitable for agricultural purposes, and added that if use in a sustainable way, it will help to bolster the country’s rich agro-sector, thus promoting self sufficiency in food production.

Vice President Boakai who is representing Her Excellency President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf at this year’s IFAD Governing Council Meeting in Italy will deliver the official opening address. He will speak on the topic: “Strengthening Investments in Agricultural Research and Enhancing Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Agriculture”.

He said the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has provided assistance to Liberia’s agriculture sector in the areas of increased crop production and capacity building including other agro-sectors geared towards benefitting the country. He said Liberia’s presence at this year’s IFAD Governing Council Meeting is very significant to enhancing the country’s future collaboration.

Other members of the Vice President delegation include, Agriculture Minister Florence Chenoweth, the Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture, Cllr. Frederick Cherue of River Gee County and Mr. Sam Stevquoh, Chief of Staff to the Office of the Vice President of the Republic of Liberia.

The 35th Session of the IFAD conference runs from February 22-23, 2012 in Rome, Italy.
