Vice President Boakai Challenges Liberians

Monday, 21st May 2007

Monrovia, Liberia - Liberian Vice President, Joseph N. Boakai has called on all Liberians, irrespective of political affiliation, social status or ethnic background to join the Unity Party-led Government in tackling the huge challenges it has inherited due to the protracted civil conflict.

He cited the challenges as restoring the country’s economic status to the days it boasted of a budget of US$600 million, rebuilding infrastructure and reconciling Liberians polarized by the excesses of the war.

“These are challenges we have to grapple with, and they will not be by mere rhetoric, but by consciously taking the necessary actions,” the Vice President noted.

Vice President Boakai made the call Sunday when he spoke at the 31st Gala anniversary celebration and fund-raising program of the Bible Way Mission.

He observed that “mindless criticisms, unwarranted strikes and other negative tendencies” will not help the nation attain its reconstruction and development goals, but only serve to divert attention from these lofty ideals.

The Liberian Vice President called on opposition politicians to re-examine their role in society, which in the past, he observed, has been merely criticizing and standing aloof as the government struggles to find answers to societal problems.

Vice President Boakai welcomed the probe instituted into the leakage of this year’s WAEC examinations, and hoped punitive measures would be meted out against those responsible for the leakage.

He commended teachers for the sacrificial services they continue to render the nation in the wake of low salaries and lack of benefits.

Vice President Boakai however reminded them that as teachers, they are molding people who will be entrusted with the destiny of the nation, and hence that they must instill in them the virtues of honesty, accountability and transparency.

Vice President Boakai made an initial contribution of US$500 towards the school’s library and laboratory project.
