India-Africa Partnership Conclave Gets Underway In New Dehli, India, Vice President Boakai to Speak On Tuesday, March 19, 2013

New Delhi, India, - The President of the Confederation of Indian Industry Mr. Adi Godrej has told delegates attending the 9th Edition of the Conference of Indian Industry on India-Africa Project Partnership that technological transfer, the environment, sustainable management of resources, biodiversity, economic social development and poverty reduction among others are priority areas of the CII and that success in these areas will serve as impetus to other countries in the global south.

Liberia is represented at the CII-Export-import Bank Conclave by Vice President Joseph N. Boakai at the head of a high Government of Liberia delegation.

Speaking at the opening of the conclave Sunday, Mr,. Godrej said the south- south cooperation is not a substitute for the North- South cooperation, but a compliment to the North-South dialogue.

South-South Cooperation is an essential crosscutting mechanism designed to enhance UNEP’s ability to deliver environmental capacity building and technology-support activities in developing countries and regions of the South. The implementation of the South-South Cooperation initiative is being carried out as part of the Bali Strategic Plan for Technology Support and Capacity Building, a UN approved approach to assisting developing countries.

The Bali Strategic Plan serves as an umbrella framework for “coherent, coordinated and effective delivery of environmental capacity-building and technical support activities” in response to well defined country priorities and needs

The Prime Minister of Cameroon who also spoke at the opening of the conclave praised India for the level of commitment to Africa’s development programs and for the level of investment India continues to make in the Cameroon.Mr.Philemon Yang said the creation of jobs and the expansion of African Economies are key priority areas of the CII –EXIM India Africa Project Partnership.

Vice President Joseph Boakai will speak to the conclave on Tuesday where he will outline priority areas for Liberia’s development programs under the theme: “India’s Global Emergence: partnering Africa’s Development.”

In his welcome address to the conclave Sunday, the Minister of Commerce and Industry and Textiles of India said the partnership between Africa and India is rooted in friendship, deprivation and exploitation of the African Continent and the Indian subcontinent by colonial masters in the past.

    Mr.Anand Sharma who captured the attention of the conferees during the time of his speech informed the delegates that the father of the Indian Nation Mahatma Ghandi spent twenty three years in Africa from where he sharpen his tools for his non violent fight against colonialism.

   He said for centuries India accommodated people who were discriminated against, Mr. Anand told the more than nine hundred delegates attending the conclave Sunday.He pointed out that India-Africa Partnership cannot be compared to any other region. Mr. Anand noted that fifty thousand scholarships have been made available to African Students and that twenty two thousand more will be added to that number. He said India and Africa are building a relationship at the time the world is redefining itself.

  He quoted Ghandi as saying that the independence of India will be incomplete without the independence of Africa. He spoke of the Pan African E-network to bridge the digital divide in Africa to which forty seven countries in Africa have been connected. He said this was not a commercial project, but a gift from the Government of India. He said Africa has a great future and that its people must benefit from their development programs.

He frowned on bigger countries that question the efficacy of the Indian Pharmaceutical industry by placing a ban on Indian drugs use in the treatment of breast cancer.

The Vice President of Zambia, Dr. Guy Scott also spoke at the opening session.
