Monrovia, Liberia President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has participated in an impressive display by local farmers of agricultural produce, marking the end of programs commemorating World Food Day.

Also on display were handicrafts by local craftsmen as well as agricultural products by the Bangladeshi Battalion of the United Nations Military Mission to Liberia (UNMIL).

The program, held on Saturday in Ganta Nimba County, was attended by senior government officials including Agriculture Minister, Dr. Chris Toe, as well as members of diplomatic missions accredited near Monrovia. President Johnson-Sirleaf thanked the Agriculture Ministry, the World Food Program and other collaborating partners for the successful implementation of the Program.

The President assured the Ministry and local farmers that agriculture would remain a major priority in government’s reconstruction drive.

Meanwhile, the President has participated in a ground-breaking ceremony for the rehabilitation of a highway linking Ganta and Sanniquellie in Nimba County. The 20-mile road project, which is being financed by USAID in partnership with the European Union, will create employment opportunities for more than a hundred and fifty Liberians in the area.

American Ambassador, Donald Booth and a Representative of the European Union as well Nimba County Senator, Adolphus Dolo and Public Works Minister, Loseni Dunzo, also participated in the ground breaking ceremony.

In a related development, the Special Representative of the Secretary-general of UNMIL, Mr. Alan Doss, has disclosed that the Mission will sign an agreement next week for the reconstruction of a highway linking Ganta, Sanniquellie, and Tappita in Nimba County.

Mr. Doss, who was also in Ganta to participate in the World Food Day program, lauded the government of President Johnson Sirleaf for its vision and promised UNMIL’s continued commitment toward the realization of those objectives, adding, “under the Sirleaf leadership, Liberia can succeed.”
