President Sirleaf Attends New Nigerian Presidentís Inauguration in Abuja

Abuja, Nigeria - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has congratulated new Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on the occasion of his colorful inauguration in Abuja, Nigeria.
According to a dispatch from Abuja, the Liberian leader and entourage arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport outside the Nigerian capital in the early hours of Friday, May 29, and joined 49 other Heads of State and Governments to witness the smooth, peaceful and democratic transition of power in Africa’s most populous country.
“Today’s inaugural ceremony testifies to the deepening of democracy across the African continent and confirms how far our continent has travelled from its dark days of wars and coup d’états as a means of political transitions,” President Sirleaf said.
The Liberian leader then praised the roles of former President Goodluck Jonathan, the contesting parties and the people of Nigeria for this inspiring example.
On the margins of the inauguration ceremonies, the Liberian President also held talks with her Guinean and Sierra Leonean counterparts, Presidents Alpha Conde and Ernest Bai Koroma.
The three Manu River Union leaders discussed matters pertaining to the ongoing fight against the Ebola virus disease that is still prevalent in Guinea and Sierra Leone.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s newly inaugurated President has assured his African counterparts and other dignitaries from around the world that Nigeria will continue to play the leadership role that Africa and the world expects of this country.
“I alos wish to assure the wider international community of our readiness to cooperate and help to combat threats of cross-border terrorism, sea piracy, refugees and boat people, financial crime, cyber-crime, climate change, the spread of communicable disease and other challenges of the 21st century, President Buhari, Nigeria’s 16th Head of State promised.
Liberia’s Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Information, Augustine Ngafuan and Lewis Brown accompanied President Sirleaf to Abuja, Nigeria.
