Monrovia, Liberia--Three newly renovated market buildings have been commissioned by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. The commissioned facilities include the Rally Time Market, New General Market at Waterside and the Duala Market on Bushrod Island. Speaking Friday at the commissioning of the markets, the President said the completion of the projects attests to her governmentís commitment to improving the welfare of Liberian market women. The President urged marketers to ensure that the facilities are properly maintained at all times.

For his part, World Bank Country Representative Luigi Giovine said his institution was pleased to participate in the projects. Mr. Giovine disclosed that the Liberia Marketing Association (LMA) and each of the market superintendents have signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOU).  Under the terms of the Understanding, the superintendents will assume responsibility for ensuring that the markets are kept cleaned and maintained. Mr. Giovine added that there will be solid waste facilities at the sites. The World Bank, he pointed out, will also provide parks and playgrounds to enhance the capacity of the facilities.

The cost of the renovation of the market buildings is estimated at US $750,000. It was funded by the World Bank and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

The newly renovated and commissioned markets are equipped with facilities which include septic tanks and new toilet facilities, generators and electrical wiring for lighting and cold storage, poly tanks for water storage, new zinc roofs, improved drainage, plastering and painting work.

The World Bank has announced that it will also fund the rehabilitation of the annex to Rally Time Market. The project is scheduled to commence in January next year.
