President Boakai Breaks Ground for Two China-Aid Overpass Bridges on Tubman Boulevard
Executive Mansion, Monrovia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., today officially broke ground for the construction of two China-Aid overpass bridges along Tubman Boulevard in Congo Town, Monrovia. The historic event was held near the EJS Ministerial Complex.
The two modern overpass bridges—one situated near the Ministerial Complex and the other at the SKD Boulevard junction—are designed to significantly reduce traffic congestion, improve safety for motorists and pedestrians, and boost economic activity by ensuring the free flow of goods, services, and emergency response vehicles.
President Boakai emphasized that the project is a “practical solution” to challenges that have long hindered mobility in the Capital, underscoring its alignment with the Government’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID).
“Roads connect people to opportunities and are essential to ending rural neglect. By investing in modern road systems, we are doing more than improving travel—we are building the foundation for a unified, accessible, and prosperous Liberia,” the President said.
The Liberian Leader extended heartfelt appreciation to the People’s Republic of China, represented by Ambassador Yin Chengwu, for its continued support to Liberia’s development, describing the two overpasses as a strong symbol of Liberia–China cooperation.
The President also commended the Ministry of Public Works for its diligence in preparation and technical coordination, while calling on the contractor to uphold the highest standards of quality, safety, and Liberian participation throughout the two-year construction period.
Highlighting the project’s benefits, President Boakai noted that the overpasses will:
• Reduce accidents and pedestrian–vehicle conflicts,
• Lower transportation costs for traders, schools, clinics, and small businesses,
• Ease travel time during peak hours, and
• Improve logistics and public transportation efficiency.
The President urged residents and businesses along the corridor to exercise patience during construction, stressing that temporary inconveniences will give way to long-term gains. He also highlighted his Government’s commitment to the maintenance and proper management of infrastructure, ensuring that roads and bridges serve their purpose for years to come.
The groundbreaking of the two overpass bridges forms part of the Government’s broader focus on infrastructure, including roads, bridges, energy, and water supply, aimed at driving inclusive growth and national development.
Concluding, President Boakai declared, “Together, we are building the Liberia we promised, a safer, faster, more connected, and more prosperous Liberia.”
