President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana To Join Regional Leaders in Commemorating Liberia’s 178th Independence Anniversary

Executive Mansion, Monrovia – His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama of the Republic of Ghana is expected in Monrovia today to join His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., and other distinguished West African leaders in celebrating Liberia’s 178th Independence Day.

President Mahama, who commenced his second non-consecutive term as President of Ghana on January 7, 2025, graciously accepted President Boakai’s invitation to participate in the national observance. His presence highlights the strong bonds of solidarity, friendship, and regional cooperation that continue to unite the peoples of West Africa.

President Mahama joins a distinguished group of regional leaders already in Liberia to mark this historic occasion. Their Excellencies President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of the Republic of Senegal and President Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco Embaló of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau arrived in Monrovia last evening. His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio of the Republic of Sierra Leone is expected to arrive by road this morning.

This year’s Independence Day celebrations are being held under the theme: “One People, One Destiny: Healing the Past, Building the Future.” The commemorative events will culminate with an official ceremony at the Executive Pavilion in Monrovia, where President Boakai will deliver the National Independence Day Address. The National Oration will be delivered by Rev. Emmett Dunn, Presidential Special Envoy for Partnership and Philanthropy.

The attendance of President Mahama and other regional heads of state is a testament to the enduring partnerships among ECOWAS nations and reflects a shared commitment to peace, democracy, and inclusive development across the subregion.

President Boakai warmly welcomes President Mahama’s visit, describing it as a powerful demonstration of mutual respect and a reaffirmation of the ties between Liberia and Ghana.
