His Excellency Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Sr. serves as the 26th Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, elected on November 14, 2023, alongside His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. A distinguished public servant, humanitarian, and entrepreneur, Vice President Koung brings decades of grassroots leadership, business innovation, and legislative experience to Liberia’s highest levels of governance. Born on March 17, 1978, in Yekepa, Nimba County, his life story reflects the resilience and determination of the Liberian people.
Early Life and Education
Vice President Koung was raised by his parents, Adam Koung and Esther Markar Koung. He spent his formative years across Nimba and Grand Bassa Counties. During the civil war, he survived on his own from the age of 12, relying on small-scale trading to support himself. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Cuttington University.
Career in Business and Community Development
Before joining public service, Vice President Koung built a successful portfolio of enterprises in petroleum distribution, vehicle importation, microfinance, real estate, and general merchandise. His humanitarian contributions include constructing the 116-bed Esther and Jereline Medical Center, installing over 136 hand pumps, and supporting schools, health facilities, market halls, and scholarship programs.
Public Service and Legislative Leadership
Vice President Koung began his political journey in 2011 when he was elected Representative of Nimba County District One. He later won a nine-year term in the Liberian Senate in 2020. He held leadership roles including Chairman of the Committee on Post & Telecommunications and Co-Chair of multiple committees such as Ways, Means and Finance, Defense, Public Works, and Public Accounts & Audit.
Election as Vice President
Vice President Koung was selected as the Vice Standard Bearer of the Unity Party by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., and elected on November 14, 2023. Since assuming office on January 22, 2024, he has served as President of the Liberian Senate, Chair of various committees set up by the President, primarily Roads Maintenance and Finance Committee, Energy, Committee to Review Regulation and Oversight of SOE’s Executives’ Salaries and Benefits, Price Contradiction Committee. Others include Chair of the High-Level Multi-stakeholder committee on Nutrition and Food Security, Oversight for the Group of 77, Liberia National Lotteries, Scaling Up Nutrition Network Secretariat (SUN), NCCRM, One Health, etc.

Vice President Koung envisions a Liberia where economic growth benefits all citizens, youth have real opportunities, communities access quality services, and local businesses drive national development.
Personal Life
Vice President Koung is married to Mrs. Synleseh Stephenie Dahn-Koung, and they are blessed with children. His family lineage reflects the cultural diversity of Liberia.
